3-D Flower
This year, not only do I teach math, but I teach science and social studies. Trying to keep science interesting, I try to do lots of hands on activities.
This is one activity my students will have a choice to complete to learn the parts of a flower. These will be a part of their interactive journals once completed.
The parts are:
stem- straw
ovary - mini cupcake liner
seeds - lentil beans
pollen- yellow dyed rice
anthers - elbow noodles
filament- pipe cleaner
petals and sepals - construction paper
roots - I drew them but they could be done using yarn if you want to keep with the 3D theme.

Prove the Sun Produces Heat
Attached is a task card for students to design an experiment which will prove that the sun produces heat. In addition to the attached task card, there are a series of assessments that can be used to evaluate the student's understanding. There is a self-assessment for each student based on their experiment and observations. There is a peer-assessment for each student to complete on the other groups when presenting their experiment and data in a presentation format of their choice. There are two rubrics for teacher assessment that will be used to assess the students' work during the experiment and observation phase and the work completed for the presentation part of the activity. Having the self evaluations and peer evaluations will help students to ensure they are meeting the requirements for the activity and it will help students to stay on task during the activity. If they are being reviewed by their peers with their presentation, they are more likely to focus on the quality of their work and to ensure that they are creative, yet to the point with the information being presented.

Worm Cross - Curricular Lesson Plan and Activities
I have created a cross - curricular lesson plan with activities tied to the stories Diary of a Worm and Wiggling Worms at Work. The activities can be tied to Science, Math, and ELA. I plan on using this plan at the beginning of the year for team building when completing the Saving Fred activity, observation how - to during science, reading for information in ELA, and comparing and contrasting a nonfiction and fiction story about worms in ELA. I hope you enjoy the packet. Please leave comments below to share thoughts or anything that could be added to the packet : )

Remind101 App
Ever need a quick and easy way to communicate with students and/or parents? Are you trying to save paper in your classroom? If so, you need to download the FREE app, Remind101. Set up classes, have parents and/or students subscribe, send out mass texts from a phone number that is not yours! You can even set up the messages ahead of time and schedule them! I've just tested this out for myself and will definitely be used next year!
